2014 Starts Off With A Flurry Of Activity In Downtown Daniel Island

January 21, 2014

Optimism about the health of our island town’s real estate market appears to be trickling down to increased activity in downtown Daniel Island. Businesses of all sizes are opening and expanding, as witnessed by the growing number of construction vehicles and crews you see in the urban heart of our community.

Simmons Park, a luxury apartment community, is currently under construction.

Right in the center of town construction on Simmons Park, a 270-unit luxury apartment community, is getting underway. Developed by Spectrum Properties, Simmons Park will provide an excellent opportunity for renters wanting to take advantage of the conveniences of living in our downtown, with shops and restaurants within walking distance right outside their front door.

In fact, Daniel Island residents have several new options for on-island dining. Last fall Agave opened in the space formerly occupied by Lana’s, and the new mexican restaurant and bar has enjoyed a growing reputation for its delicious and inexpensive mexican dishes, margaritas and friendly and fun staff.

The building formerly housing Queen Anne’s Revenge, next to the Hampton Inn, has been transformed a light and airy space called The Islander. This family-friendly bar and restaurant is owned and managed by Holy City Hospitality, the same folks who operate several popular downtown Charleston restaurants, including Rue de Jean, Virginia’s on King and Coast. The restaurant features a great outdoor terrace, casual coastal fare and several spaces for private dining and special events.

But that’s not all – the newest restaurant to join the ranks on Daniel Island is Ristorante Lidi, a family-style Italian restaurant located at the corner of River Landing and Island Park drives that is scheduled to open next month. Lidi will offer authentic Italian cuisine based on regional traditions. Dishes will focus on handmade, sustainable and local ingredients.

These new businesses will benefit not only from the increase in new residents moving into our downtown and other neighborhoods, but also from the recently announced expansion of Daniel Island-based Benefit Focus. The growing software manufacturer is tripling the size of its Daniel Island headquarters with the addition of 1,200 new jobs. BenefitFocus currently employs about 600 people on its 13-acre campus, which will grow to 40 acres with the expansion. Construction has already begun.

More island neighbors, new businesses and more jobs – it’s a great way to start off the new year on Daniel Island!
